TFN & ABN Registration
Get your Australian tax and business registrations organised.
TFN and ABN registration
A Tax File Number (TFN) and Australian Business Number (ABN) serve different purposes. A TFN is used for tax and superannuation administration, while an ABN identifies a business or organisation when dealing with the Australian tax and business systems.
Who may need an ABN?
Not everyone earning money needs an ABN. Whether an activity is a business and whether an ABN is appropriate depends on the nature of the activity and the applicable rules.
Starting as a sole trader
If you are starting a genuine sole trader business, you may need an ABN and may also need to consider GST, record keeping and other obligations. Registering an ABN does not automatically mean you are carrying on a business for every tax purpose.
International students and TFNs
International students who work in Australia may need a TFN so their employer can administer tax correctly. The correct process depends on the person's circumstances and identification documents.
